AFTER TRUMP’S INAUGURATION, Jared and Frank go full bore ahead but ACT as an entity seems to moderate. ACT president Brigitte Gabriel fires Texas chapter leader Roy White for refusing to cancel a meeting about how to shut down mosques. ACT is “not in the business of shutting down any place of worship based on what religion it houses. We are in the business of making sure no house of worship incites violence in the name of religion, nor harbors or supports terrorists who wish our destruction” reads a statement.

Gabriel warns members: “In no way does our organization advocate or tolerate bigotry, or threats of violence toward anyone, especially because of which God they may choose to worship.” Members who espouse bigoted views will be expelled, she says.

It’s a curious turn, given the group’s hard-core stand against Islam in the past and given that Gabriel previously had lauded White. Has Gabriel nudged her organization away from hard right because the Southern Poverty Law Center named ACT a hate group and she wants to disprove the designation? Does she hope to attract members by broadening ACT’s base?

I ask Jared what’s going on. He’s not sure. A few weeks later Gabriel posts two photos on Facebook. She’s in Washington, DC, at the White House, giving thumbs-up in one and seated with an unidentified staffer in the other. A caption reads “Very productive day at the White House.”
